Medicine Hat Airport
Waterloo to Calgary in a Cessna 150
Werner decides to take a longer break here at Medicine Hat
Airport, as we've been enroute over eight hours, since 6:30 this
morning. The weather is really hot! FZ-Oscar is finding it a little
strenuous climbing in the hot air and higher altitude. We've
made good time, and since our kids won't be home until evening
anyway, we might as well relax now, and head out when it's a bit
cooler.
The people at the airport are very friendly and hospitable. We
enjoy some snacks and juice, and I'm quite happy to have a little
nap on the couch in the lounge, in the cooler air!
Meanwhile, Werner chats with another pilot, and mentions that
we are planning to land at Airdrie. Alternatively, we could have
chosen Springbank, which is a larger, regular airport, but
farther from our son's place in north Calgary.
The other pilot tells us to call first. He relates that he himself
had recently made a landing at Airdrie Airpark, since it's listed
in the Flight Supplement, has a 5000 ft. newly-paved runway,
the Airdrie Flying Club operates here, and although listed as
private, it is being developed. To his surprise, he was chewed
out by the manager for not getting landing permission
beforehand. Apparently, others had the same experience.
Werner phones right then and there for permission, saying we
plan to arrive this evening. The manager is very friendly and
accomodating, and even assigns a parking spot where we can
keep the plane during our holiday, and our son can make his
own longer term arrangements for FZO to park there. Very
friendly, absolutely no problem! So, the advice is: if you want to
land at Airdrie Airpark, simply call ahead!!
Werner looks after technical details: downloads all my pictures
onto the harddrive; updates the flight information on his GPS and
does the flight planning for the very last leg of our trip...
