Wawa Stopover
Waterloo to Calgary in a Cessna 150
Our arrival in Wawa at 13:14 (1:14 p.m.) means
we're making reasonably good progress.
All we need is to refuel FZO, get some lunch
ourselves, then head on to Terrace Bay, and end
up in Thunder Bay for the evening.
A friendly taxi driver takes us to the comfortable Beaver Motel not far from the airport. Across the street at Wally's Restaurant,
we eat a delicious, home-style very late lunch or early supper, then head back to our room to recuperate from the sheer
quantity--maybe a hike along the Magpie River would be a good idea!
However, starting to look at some of my digital aerial photos on the laptop, we're soon engrossed in a whole courseload of
instruction, constructive criticism and discussion about photo composition. There is an alarming frequency of slanted horizons.
(I wonder: is it possible the airplane isn't being flown absolutely level?-- just kidding!)
An even greater disappointment is that many images are spoiled by window glare. OK, I finally convince myself: from now on,
it's only open-window photography for me, at least for views on the passenger side...
On to a nice hot bath, to reflect on the gorgeous scenery, on the many pictures that turned out great and improvements to
make, while Werner does some flight planning exercises with the GPS, and on his own program on the laptop.
And then to sleep.
Finally Werner comes out with news from the
weather briefing: there is heavy rain and low
visibility moving through along the north shore
of Lake Superior. Flight Service advises us to stay
in Wawa until morning. They promise we will
certainly be rewarded with beautiful clear skies
then...
